Family Paws Training: Dogs & Storks® Program

Why Preparation Matters

As you prepare your San Diego home for the arrival of a baby, it’s also important to consider how your dog may react to new sights, smells, and sounds. They may easily become confused or even stressed, necessitating proper training to equip them for this change.
Through our Family Paws Dogs & Storks® program in San Diego, we focus on providing dog training before the baby arrives.

This includes baby sounds desensitization training and teaching dogs to remain gentle and calm around your infant.

Our focus is on proactive planning for safety and harmony, and our methods reflect this by prioritizing prevention rather than punishment.

Kindred Dog Owner Susie Petrucci is a Licensed Family Paws Parent Educator.

What the Dogs & Storks® Program Covers

  • Gradual exposure to baby noises, toys, and routines
Assessing your dog’s unique sensitivities to the world around them and using management and training to better prepare them for when the baby arrives.

Introducing sounds, smells, and objects to your dog prior to the baby’s arrival gives new San Diego parents plenty of time to help their dog acclimate and form positive associations to upcoming shifts in routine and other sensory changes.
  • Foundational cues and reading dog language
It’s important to train your dog basic foundational cues so that they understand what is expected when you are caring for your baby.

If your dog is unable to do foundational cues that were once fluent in a certain environment, chances are your dog is feeling uncomfortable, stressed, or overly aroused.

By observing your dog’s body language and behavior, you can better understand what your dog is trying to communicate to you at any moment in time. Your dog’s body language will allow you to help them navigate from anxious or uncomfortable situations to finding peace and safety.
  • Success stations
Creating safe spaces where your dog feels comfortable and included in baby/family dynamics without directly interacting with the baby.
  • Understanding supervision and scenarios
Kindred Dog’s family dog training for new parents teaches families how to prepare their dog for various situations with a baby on scene.
